What each layer is based on

Open jobs
Postings listed on employers' own careers sites and applicant-tracking systems, first seen in the last 100 days, that Xcout could place in a US city. Postings with no usable US location are not counted.
Companies hiring
Distinct employers with at least one such posting in the place. It is where companies hire, not where they are headquartered; one company counts in every state it posts in.
AI-related share
The share of postings whose role uses or builds AI (Xcout's AI level 2 or 3, classified from the posting text).
Median advertised pay
The p25, median and p75 of the annual USD salary stated in postings, shown only where at least 20 postings state one. Many employers state pay only where the law requires it, so pay coverage varies by state.
Cities
The 200 US cities with the most postings are drawn as circles sized by postings. Each state's panel lists its own largest cities (a city is counted only with 25 or more postings).
Not shown yet
Companies by headquarters, funding and investors by state. Xcout Intel holds a headquarters city for fewer than 3% of US companies today (6,594 of 240,198), too few to rank states honestly.
